A Dementia Friendly Council

Newport Town Council is a member of Newport Dementia Action Alliance, Shropshire, and is committed to help people affected by dementia in our community.

Making our town a more dementia-friendly community is clearly the right thing to do for all our local families affected by dementia. Being a DAA member will help to keep us focused on our actions and these will be informed by families affected by dementia, by others in our community, and by our ongoing discussions at the Dementia-Friendly Newport Group.

A bit more time

People with dementia can find everyday things more difficult, being a little more patient can go a long way towards making these situations easier.

The Guildhall is often a point of contact for local residents, and staff have become Dementia Friends to provide support to individuals and their friends and family in order to enable them to access Town Council Services more easily.

Dementia Friend

Being a Dementia Friends is about turning understanding into actions.

Five key things you should know about dementia:-

Dementia is not a natural part of the ageing process.Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain.Dementia is not just losing your memory. It is possible to live well with dementia. There is more to the person than dementia.

Being a Dementia Friend is as simple as thinking; is there someone who needs help? Or a small thing I can do that will make that person’s life just a little bit easier.”
Angela Rippon, Alzheimer Society Ambassador

Newport Town Council has a clear action plan, with a number of Councillors and staff having received training to become Dementia Friends.

Newport Town Council Action Plan

  1. Members of the council to become DEMENTIA FRIENDS– A number of Councillors became DEMENTIA FRIENDS at a full meeting of the council addressed by a Dementia Friends Champion.

  2. Support and attend local Dementia Action Group –Newport Town Councillors were instrumental in establishing the new dementia action group in the town, and they continue to   support it.

  3. Display local groups/support information on community notice boards and Website– This is already happening, but we are committed to displaying dementia-friendly and Alzheimer’s Society information going forward, also helping spreading the word to encourage others to become dementia friends too.
