Newport Town Council Beacon Event

To celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s historic reign the Town Council will be lighting our own Beacon to form part of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth chain of over 1500 Beacons.

The Jubilee Beacon will be placed at the top of St Nicholas Church Tower to enable it to be seen across the Town. It will be lit by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Shrophire, Ian Sawers, at exactly 9.45pm, to coincide with the lighting of every Beacon in the chain.

Prior to the Beacon being lit the local Military Wives Choir will perform a programme of music in front of St Nicholas Church.

At 9.35pm a piper will play Diu Regnare – a tune written specially for the occasion by Piper Stuart Liddell, Pipe Major of the World Champion Inveraray and District Pipe Band.

At 9.40pm a Bugler will announce the lighting of the Beacon by playing “Majesty” a unique Bugler Call written especially for the Jubilee.

In order to ensure the event passes safely there will be a road closure in place between  Lower Bar (including St Mary’s Street) and the mini roundabout at the junction of High Street and Stafford Street from 8.45pm to 10.45pm.

The Town Council would like to thank Telford & Wrekin Council for their generous grant contribution to enable this event to take place
