Newport Town Council - A Dementia Friendly Council

Newport Town Council is a member of Newport Dementia Action Alliance, Shropshire, and is committed to help people affected by dementia in our community.

Making our town a more dementia-friendly community is clearly the right thing to do for all our local families affected by dementia. Being a DAA member will help to keep us focused on our actions and these will be informed by families affected by dementia, by others in our community, and by our ongoing discussions at the Dementia-Friendly Newport Group.

Newport Town Council has a clear action plan, with all Councillors having received training and are all Dementia Friends.

A bit more time

People with dementia can find everyday things more difficult, being a little more patient can go a long way towards making these situations easier.

The Guildhall is often the first point of contact for residents, and has a receptionist trained to support individuals and their friends and family to access Town Council Services.

 Dementia Friend

Being a Dementia Friends is about turning understanding into actions.

Five key things you should know about dementia:-

1. Dementia is not a natural part of the ageing process.

2. Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain.

3. Dementia is not just losing your memory.

4. It is possible to live well with dementia.

5. There is more to the person than dementia.

Being a Dementia Friend is as simple as thinking; is there someone who needs help? Or a small thing I can do that will make that person’s life just a little bit easier.”
Angela Rippon, Alzheimer Society Ambassador
